Campus Chapters
Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapters are student led organizations on many high school and college campuses. They work with their local affiliate to advocate, educate, build, and fund raise for the families in their area.
The Greater Erie Area Habitat for Humanity works with 3 local college campuses: Allegheny College, Mercyhurst College, and Gannon University.
Allegheny College Chapter
The Allegheny College Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter is our oldest chapter beginning in 1990. They continue to be very active on their campus to this day. Every year the chapter hosts a Hut-a-Thon on campus as a fundraiser and to educate and advocate for affordable housing. The event is held on the main road through campus where they build a hut out of donated materials and then ask cars passing by to make a donation to Habitat for Humanity. The Hut-a-Thon involves the entire Campus to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. It is their biggest fundraiser of the year. In 2010 they raised $1200.
Mercyhurst College Chapter
The Mercyhurst College Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter is a very active chapter as they participate in off-campus events as well as on-campus events. Off- campus, every year the chapter participates in a collegiate challenge trip. The group travels during their spring break to various Habitat’s to build with them for the week. Along with these trips the chapter builds multiple times throughout the school year with our affiliate. On campus, the chapter participated in homelessness week where they built a cardboard village, only this year they also used 2 × 4’s and other materials to build sturdier versions to bring awareness about Habitat to the campus.
Gannon University Chapter
The Gannon University Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter is our newest chapter beginning in 2008. They participate in multiple builds throughout the school year with our affiliate, host fundraisers, advocacy events, and education events. In the past two years, the chapter has participated in a fundraiser called Trick or Treat for Change. The chapter puts out flyers about a week before Halloween. Then on Halloween they go Trick or Treating but instead of collecting candy they collect change. The change is then donated to Habitat for Humanity.
