- More than 13 million U.S. households pay more than 50% of their income for housing.
- 6.1 million households live in overcrowded conditions.
- 1 out of every 7 poor families lives without hot water, electricity, toilet, or bath nor shower.
Cost burdens, overcrowding, and substandard living conditions are three reasons families across the U.S. are living in inadequate housing. The same holds true here in Erie. According to HUD CHAS data, there are 18,295 cost burden units, 414 overcrowded units, and 360 substandard units in Erie County. We are the 13th highest county in Pennsylvania for cost burden units and overcrowded units and 14th highest county in Pennsylvania for substandard units.
Habitat for Humanity is addressing these statistics through its affordable housing program but we need your help. Consider sharing the importance of simple, decent housing for all God’s people.
